IRAC Shows Yet Again It Has a Transparency Problem

IRAC’s grand pronouncement that it was “disappointed” in an independent review of its operations was not surprising.

It’s like asking Sam Altman if he wants AI to be regulated by others. Of course not.

The way IRAC operates does not work for Islanders, and it is packed full of political appointees feeding at the trough.

Most ironic was their displeasure at the report being released to the public before they had a chance to read it.

You could almost hear the shouting from the ivory tower on Kent Street: “Openness? Transparency? Don’t you know that’s against everything we stand for?”

Pam Williams – who owes her job entirely to Dennis King – did her level best to hide the non-existence of a 2018 report on Buddhist landholdings. If she had her way that secret would have been kept for many more years.

Her reaction just shows how badly the review was needed. No one at IRAC wants to see the hood popped so PEI’s ordinary commoners can get a look at what they do under a massive shroud of secrecy.

For Williams to also cast aspersions on the Rory Francis review by questioning its independence is rich.

Yes, the speed of Rob Lantz’s response was jarring, seizing on it as a potential election issue.

But one of the most enormous problems with IRAC is its lack of independence from government. To sling mud at someone else on the same score is petty and should only draw more attention to its failings.

Since Williams took over as CEO, she has done nothing to dispel the widely held perception of secrecy at IRAC. Twice now, she has publicly pouted at the suggestion of greater transparency.

That attitude says everything we need to know about the need for change.
