The Coalition for the Protection of PEI Lands

Protect The Land, Be It Farms Forests Urban

Who We Are

our concern about all
lands

The Coalition for the Protection of PEI Land was formed in 2018 by a group of Islanders from a diverse range of backgrounds, all with a common concern about our lands.  We use the term lands in order to convey our concerns about all lands, be it farm, forest or urban.

How We Are Affected

The loss of land affects
us all

In PEI we have the Lands Protection Act, which was designed to protect our precious lands from speculation, land grabbing and corporate control.  Unfortunately, governments continue to stall and/or look the other way while these actions abuse the LPA and show little to no regard for the spirit and intent of the Lands Protection Act. The results are devastating, and include farm land that is unaffordable to most islanders, massive and ongoing erosion, fishkills, anoxic waterways, and nitrates leaching into private wells and threatening our fishing industry. Industrial agriculture is behind much of this devastation and they have deep pockets, which makes it difficult to compete.

What We Do

Our committee exists to raise awareness

Our committee exists to raise awareness about the issues and hold government to account to address them. To that end we have hosted forums, including a standing room only one on  land grabbing featuring our much respected local Senator, Diane Griffin. Our team regularly submits opinion pieces and letters to the editor in local papers. We make presentations to committees such as the Land Matters and Natural Resource Sustainability committees.  Most recently we ran an ad campaign on local radio stations in order to raise awareness about our and many other Islanders’ concerns.  We funded all of these events through generous donations from concerned Islanders via a Gofundme campaign.  Without these donations, none of this would be possible.  If you are concerned too, please donate to our campaign.  We have so much work to do!
